Birthday Skirt

A-line skirt Today’s my birthday! I’m a quarter of a century. Makes a girl think…

We’re off to eat loads of Schnitzel and french fries at our favorite local restaurant “Die Krone” – The Crown. Incidentally, it happens to be the only local restaurant and only offers about 8 different dishes, so it’s a good thing that they are delicious. To round out my birthday feast, I’ve made two cakes for my party tomorrow – Banana toffee ice cream cake and Avocaat (egg liquer) cake. Om nom nom!

And I have a newly refurbished old skirt to wear! I whipped this skirt up the first time about ten years ago out of scraps from my mom’s fabric stash. The sewing was really messy (anybody heard of a straight hemline? 15-year old me hadn’t!) and the fabric was of such different weights that it didn’t hang right.

While most the panels were made of quilting cotton, the ivy panels are made from heavy curtain fabric, and the pale panels with small flowers, right in the center , are made from a very light fabric  – it feels like it might be rayon. To even this up, I removed the rayon panels and underlined them with cotton batiste. I also added a batiste lining, a matching waistband, and a nice, even hemline – all things that were missing before.

I’m really happy with how it turned out and I hope I can wear it a few times before it gets too cold. The only thing that could make it more perfect would be an elastic panel to accommodate all the Schnitzel 😛
